Propolis begins as a sticky, glue-like resin substance collected by honeybees. Bees modify the resin with their own enzymes, now bee resin, in order to use propolis in the construction and repair of various parts of the hive; as a structural component to weld honeycombs, seal cracks and close openings; and to protect the hive from predatory intruders and infection by bacterial, fungal, and viral agents .
The word Propolis is of Greek origin and breaks down into “pro” (defense) and “polis” (city), which combined means to “defend the city”, referring to the entire hive. The ancient Egyptians employed propolis in the embalming of cadavers. The Incas believed it reduced fevers, and the Greeks and Romans used it as an antiseptic mouth rinse and to help heal wounds.
Propolis comes in many colors and varieties, depending on the geographical location and the primary botanical food source of the bees producing it, and each type of propolis has its own signature of bioactive ingredients. Brazilian Green Propolis, in particular, comes from Africanized honeybees feeding largely on the pollen of Baccharis dracunculifolia DC, (family Asteraceae), commonly known as “alecrim do campo”. Brazilian Green Propolis is the most highly sought after type of propolis in the world market because of its many health benefits.
Research with green propolis and its extracts has indicated a wide variety of health-promoting properties including antioxidant activity, and a range of other benefits that affect different physiologic systems from the immune system to specific organs including the gastrointestinal system. It has shown to support the body’s defense mechanisms and support for the respiratory tract and blood chemistry matters. Green propolis added to toothpaste or mouthwash shows the potential to be of significant benefit to overall oral health and supporting normal digestive function. Phenolic acids, including quercetin, p-coumaric, caffeic, ferulic, and cinnamic acids, can be found in Brazilian green Propolis. Artepillin-C, a cinnamic acid, unique to Brazilian green propolis, has shown the ability to selectively block the oncogenic PAK1 signaling pathway.
